Chantal's Windows
Rent a Herk story
by Hilara
"I'm not honoring that coupon" HerK said vehemently.
"And why not?" Ares asked in an equally gruff tone.
"Because it's expired. It was only good for the grand opening of Sorbo-Mart."
"Hey I was distracted that night."
"And just whose fault was that?" HerK inquired.
"Look either you honor it or I'll..."
Suddenly there was a flash of lightening and a crash of thunder inside the store.
"Boys, Boys you had better not test me" Zeus warned as he appeared by their side. "That truce between you certainly didn't last long. I'm frankly getting sick and tired of playing referee between the two of you."
"He always starts it" HerK complained.
"Me, I'm totally innocent" Ares said looking anything
but.
"Enough" Zeus shouted. "I don't care who started what, all I know is that I'm going to finish it. I've decided what you two need is a joint project."
"A joint project?" HerK asked. "I'm not working with him"
"That's good cause I don't want to work with you either" Ares agreed.
"It's for Chantal" Zeus told them.
"Chantal?" Herk and Ares both chimed. Zeus clearly had their intrest now and he gave a delighted chuckle. " I knew that would get your attention."
"What does our darling, Chantal need?" Ares questioned.
"Her loft windows need washing."
"What?" HerK questioned. Zeus waved a sheet of paper in front of his face. "Sorbo-Mart is branching out. A service called Rent-A-HerK. When the beautiful amazons need help at home or on the job, members of the staff here are expected to be at their service. I found this note posted on the new bulletin board."
HerK grabbed it. "I'd be delighted to go and help the lovely, Chantal."
"No I can handle this one. I'd do anything for my dear, Chantal". Ares said trying to rip the note out of HerK's hand.
"You don't even work here" HerK argued.
"That won't be a problem" Zeus assured HerK. "I've gotten permission from Hilara. I am still king of the gods you know."
"We know father" HerK and Ares said dutifully.
"Now, I said you'rr going to be doing this project together and I
meant it. Be prepared to arrive at Chantal's first thing tomorrow morning. And you both
had better behave, because I'll be watching."
HerK and Ares were both up on the scaffolding. The sun was high and sweat was gleaming on
their bugling muscles. Chantal sat with a book, pretending to be reading but she'd been on
the same page
for the last half an hour, not to mention that the book was upside down. And more often
than not her gaze was directed upwards and she wasn't looking to see, if she could spot
Mt. Olympus in the sky. Surprisingly all had gone well so far between HerK and Ares.
Both had taken frequent breaks
to drink lemonade and feed some grapes to Chantal. Yet things were about to go wrong.
"You left a streak on that window."
Herc pointed out to Ares.
"I did not, that's on your side"
"Like Tarturus it is."
"Are you implying that I Ares, the god of war does not know how to wash a window?"
"Forget it" HerK said. "I want these windows to sparkle like diamonds for Chantal."
"And you think I don't?" "I'll make them out shine the stars for her." They both turned back to their work with new fervor and gave Chantal a marvelous view of their award worthy backsides. Chantal couldn't help it. She whistled. They both turned, smiled and waved their gratitude.
"What are you waving for?" HerK asked.
"Chantal was admiring my assets." Ares informed him.
"Keep on dreaming half brother, it is me she's looking at."
"Oh really?" Ares asked as he put a hand on HerK's shoulders and pushed.
"Yeah reallly" HerK replied and pushed back.
"Guys there is no need to fight, really I love both your, ahem, assets. Please stop, you could fall."
But is was too late the scaffolding came crashing to the ground. Amazingly neither one of them was hurt. They got back on their feet and automatically went back to the fight. Zeus appeared beside Chantal. "Zeus" Chantal pleaded "don't be to harsh on them."
"Don't worry my dear, Chantal" Zeus said. He lifted her hand and kissed it. Then he took the book from her other hand and turned it right side up. Chantal blushed.
"Where is your garden hose?"
"Over there." she pointed. Zeus picked it up and turned on the
spicket. Then he let his two sons
have it full blast. By the time he was finished both of them were thoroughly soaked from
head to toe. Water dripped from HerK's long hair and droplets were even falling off Ares'
mustache. Two towels appeared in his hands.
"Have fun drying them off my dear" he said to Chantal as he disappeared. "Oh you bet I will", Chantal vowed as she advanced on HerK and Ares, smiling from ear to ear.
Soon HerK and Ares were smiling too.
